Sri Lanka revises down death toll in attacks to 253

Sri Lanka's Health Ministry said on Thursday that the death toll following a series of attack in the country on Easter Sunday has been revised down from earlier reported 359 to "about 253."

The ministry said the larger death toll was released as a result of a calculation error.

Sri Lankan authorities suspect the bombings in hotels and churches in the country were carried out by nine individuals and the Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attacks. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando stepped down from his position on the request of President Maithripala Sirisena after the country's officials admitted to massive intelligence failures ahead of the attacks.
