Tariffs are useful in negotiations with China - Kudlow

Director of the United States National Economic Council Larry Kudlow said on Sunday that, although he believes in free trade, the punitive measures against Chinese imports imposed by President Donald Trump proved to be "useful in negotiating" with Beijing. Kudlow pointed out, speaking on Fox News Channel, that China's trade practices are still a reason for many "structural and enforcement issues."

"I’m a free-trade guy. The president’s tariffs, however, have been extremely useful in negotiating... If it doesn’t work out, then I think what the president is saying in today’s tweet is that we will continue these tariffs," Kudlow stated. "China has got to end its unfair, nonreciprocal trading system. They’re breaking the laws," he asserted.

Kudlow's remarks come after President Trump tweeted that on Friday the US government will increase the tariffs targeting goods for China to 25% as long as China tries to "renegotiate" the trade deal. The president pointed out that the tariffs are "partially responsible for great economic results" in the US.
