US blames Iran for attack on oil tankers - report

According to the initial assessment by a United States military team, Iran or Iran-backed proxies are behind the attack on oil tankers off the coast of the Emirate of Fujairah on Sunday, the Associated Press reported. An unnamed US official told the news agency that the investigators believe the perpetrators used explosives to make holes in the four ships, two of which belong to Saudi Arabia, one to Norway and one to the United Arab Emirates.

US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook stated the US is providing assistance in the investigation at the request of Saudi Arabia, but he declined to comment on whether Iran played a role in the incident. Saudi Arabia called it a "sabotage operation" while Iran said that "another country" could be behind the attack.
