Pelosi: We have to avoid any war with Iran

"Any war" with Iran has to be avoided, said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a Democratic Caucus meeting on Wednesday, as reported by Politico. Together with other Congress leaders, she is set to question on Thursday officials from the administration of President Donald Trump on recent developments that indicate increased tensions with Iran in the Middle East, two Democratic sources said. Pelosi has also requested a broader congressional briefing on Iran eight days ago, one of the sources said, but it has not yet been confirmed by the administration.

Fears of an escalation of the US-Iran conflict have been rising recently as the Department of State ordered the departure of non-emergency government employees from Iraq. Later, State Secretary Mike Pompeo stated that Iran-backed militia moved their missiles close to American bases in Iraq and vowed there will be a "strong response" from the US in case the militias represent a threat for American troops. The US Central Command yesterday raised the threat level to its service members in Iraq and Syria to "high." However, Trump denied he is planning to send 120,000 troops to the Middle East to counter Iran in case of possible escalations of tensions. "Now would I do that? Absolutely. But I have not planned for that," he stated.
