Mnuchin hints he won't comply with Trump tax returns subpoena

United States Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin hinted on Wednesday that he and the Treasury Department will not comply with the subpoena regarding President Donald Trump's six worth of tax returns, CNBC reported. He stated, during a testimony at the US Senate, that the department has not yet made a final decision on the matter, but that the Senate can most likely "guess which way we're leaning."

Mnuchin noted that there is a "difference in interpretation between Congress and us." "That not only impacts this president and this Congress, but has a very big impact on every single taxpayer in weaponizing the IRS... This is why there are three branches of government, so if there is a difference of opinion this will go to the third branch of government to be resolved," he pointed out, signaling that the case could go beyond Congress.

Earlier this month, the House Ways and Means Committee subpoenaed Mnuchin and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Charles Rettig on Trump's tax returns, stressing that they are a "necessary piece in the committee's work."
