Polite talk does not mean we will fail our natl interests - Lavrov

Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov responded on Wednesday to remarks made by President Vladimir Putin concerning bilateral ties with the United States, saying that "polite conversation" with the US does not necessarily mean that Russia will "make concessions that contradict its national interests." "Politeness and pliability are different concepts," he underlined.

Russia's top diplomat also noted that Moscow will support the proposal to hold a meeting between Putin and US President Donald Trump during the G20 summit in Osaka, if such a proposal is made by Washington.

So far, however, the US has not made any formal request for a meeting, although Putin confirmed earlier that Russia is interested in restoring bilateral ties with the US and resolving issues of mutual interest and noted that the summit in Japan is the "nearest opportunity" to meet with his American counterpart.
