Companies support US carbon tax in meeting with lawmakers

Representatives of 75 companies met with United States lawmakers in Washington to lobby for a national carbon tax. The meeting included oil giants Exxon Mobil Corp., BP Plc, and Royal Dutch Shell Plc, according to media reports.

An unnamed source familiar with the lobbying effort told the Hill that "the involvement of fossil fuel companies in the new push is primary due to foreign-based oil and gas companies who agree with the international consensus for climate action." The report also claimed the oil companies see the carbon tax as preferable to tougher regulations, such as the Green New Deal, which aim to abandon fossil fuels altogether.
