Salvini dismisses infringement concerns

Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister of Italy Matteo Salvini told reporters on Thursday that he hopes the government's letter to the European Commission would prevent the EU's executive arm from starting an infringement procedure. The EC informed the government about its course of action earlier, saying that it should take measures to fix a 0.7% deviation of the country's GDP with regard to its structural deficit target.

"This morning I had an hour and a half of talks with the Economy Minister [Giovani Tria] about the letter, which we will respond to politely with positive numbers that will shelter us from other letters or infringement procedures," Salvini stated.

Talking to reporters, Salvini seized the occasion to rule out the possibility of early elections in September amid tensions with his coalition partner and Deputy Premier and Labor and Industry Minister Luigi Di Maio who will today face a vote of no-confidence in his leadership of the Five Star Movement following the party's poor performance in the European elections on Sunday.
