J&J ordered to pay $300M in talc baby power case

Johnson & Johnson (J&J) must pay a $300 million in punitive damages to a woman who blamed her asbestos-related cancer on its talc-based products, media reported on Friday.

The company said in a statement that the trial suffered "significant legal and evidentiary errors" and that it would appeal the verdict. It further asserted that "decades" of tests by independent experts as well as academic institutions had established that its baby powder does not contain asbestos or cause cancer. It is currently faced with over 13,000 talc-related lawsuits.

Reports in December hinted that J&J's baby powder contained asbestos, allegations that it vehemently denied. India's federal drug regulator subsequently said that it would test samples of the powder following the reports.
