Ford's Bridgend plant to shut down in 15 months

Ford's plant in Bridgend, South Wales, will be closed in September 2020, a union source told Sky News. The company is yet to confirm the exact date of the closure.

Earlier in the day, British media reported that workers will be sent home during the day, when Ford confirms the closure. A total of 1,500 jobs will be lost once the factory is shut. A total of 1,700 people work at the factory and some may be offered redeployment.

As a part of its global cost-cutting program and on the backdrop of Brexit, Ford sees Bridgend as underutilized and says it has a cost disadvantage compared to other plants. Executives from Ford are set to meet union leaders in Essex on Thursday.
