Theresa May officially resigns as Tory leader

British Prime Minister Theresa May has officially resigned as the leader of the Conservative Party, Tory's 1922 Committee confirmed in a statement published on Friday. However, as was announced two weeks ago, May will stay on as prime minister until the party elects its new leader, which is scheduled to happen in the week beginning July 22.

The Committee also invited all potential candidates who wish to replace May as the next party leader to hand in their nominations until Monday, June 10 at 5:00 pm. According to an earlier announcement, the 1922 Committee changed its internal rules in order to speed up the process of electing a new leader.
