Gove wants to remove backstop to keep UK together

United Kingdom Environment Secretary and a candidate for the next prime minister Michael Gove said on Monday that he wants to completely eliminate the Irish backstop arrangement from the withdrawal agreement with the European Union, because it is the best way to keep the UK together. Speaking at a press conference at his leadership bid launch, Gove said that alternative arrangements should be considered to replace the backstop.

The official noted that the UK's divorce from the EU is challenging, but that he is a true Brexiteer that the he had been advocating for London to leave the bloc for a long time. He pointed out that he took the consequences of supporting Brexit. Additionally, Gove stressed that he is a "great fan" former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, but that he would discuss future appointments to the cabinet with the queen first.
