Uber Technologies Inc. and Volvo Car Group on Wednesday unveiled first of their prototype cars capable of fully driving itself, Volvo XC90 SUV. The companies stated that the vehicle will enter production able to fit self-driving technology at the factory level, instead of needing to be retrofitted like previous versions of the car. Additionally, the SUV will one day be deployed in self-driving mode on Uber's network as a part of an autonomous ride-sharing service.

According to a press release, third-generation jointly developed car will boast enhanced protection which is designed for a computer to control. Currently, specially trained Uber employees are operating and overseeing the autonomous vehicles in limited geographical areas, but the plan is to gradually grow these areas as the vehicle’s capabilities expand.
