Frontline tanker torpedoed near Fujairah - reports

A torpedo hit Frontline's oil tanker on Thursday off the coast of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, causing it to catch fire, according to shipping newspaper Tradewinds that cited unnamed industry sources.

The tanker Front Altair, owned by Frontline Ltd., had loaded oil in Abu Dhabi before it sent a distress signal to Fujairah, a port at the Sea of Oman. Reuters cited four sources who said that two tankers have been evacuated - Marshall Islands-flagged Front Altair and the Panama-flagged Kokuka Courageous - with all of the crew unharmed.

United States Navy said it is assisting two oil tankers targeted in a "reported attack" in the Sea of Oman. Earlier, a maritime safety group from the United Kingdom - The Royal Institution of Naval Architects - warned of an incident in the Sea of Oman and urged "extreme caution."
