Hong Kong protesters demand leader to resign

Hundreds of thousands of protesters dressed all in black gathered in the center of Hong Kong on Sunday, demanding for the Beijing-backed territory leader Carrie Lam to resign from her post.

Local media reported that many citizens at the rally were holding banners such as "Do not shoot, we are Hong Konger," referring to the violent protests earlier in the week when the police started firing rubber bullets and shooting tear gas at the crowds.

The protests started earlier this month amid worries that the proposed legislation which would allow the extradition of criminals to mainland China could be misused and put the special administrative region's legal independence in jeopardy. The rally continued despite the fact that Hong Kong's government decided to suspend the bill in an attempt to prevent further violent clashes and noted it intends to hear all views from the public on the issue.
