Volvo, Nvidia join forces on self-driving trucks

The Volvo Group announced on Tuesday it signed an agreement with Nvidia Corporation to work together on the development of an artificial intelligence system for self-driving commercial trucks and machines.

The two companies noted the partnership will span several years and added they will join forces on developing an autonomous driving system "utilizing Nvidia's "end-to-end artificial intelligence platform for training, simulation and in-vehicle computing." The system, which will first be used in commercial pilots, before it is applied to Volvo's commercial vehicles, will enable the use of self-driving vehicles for freight transport, refuse and recycling collection, public transport, as well as in construction, mining and other areas.

Volvo CEO Martin Lundstedt noted that the partnership represents an "important step" towards the carmaker's goal to "gradually introduce automated applications in the entire spectrum of automation, from driver support systems to fully autonomous vehicles and machines."
