UnitedHealth buys PatientsLikeMe after Chinese investors crackdown

UnitedHealth Group Inc. bought the health startup PatientsLikeMe after the latter was forced to cut ties with its investors because they were mostly China-based, CNBC reported. Previously, PatientsLikeMe drew the attention of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), a government body charged with protecting national security by reviewing economic transactions by foreign entities.

The current US administration is ramping up its efforts against Chinese tech investors, after which PatientsLikeMe's main financial backer was forced to divest from the health startup.

Both companies stated that the patients' personal data will not be transferred to the health insurer without their consent. Recently, UnitedHealth Group also acquired healthcare payments company Equian LLC for around $3.2 billion.
