San Francisco bans e-cigarettes

San Francisco banned the sale of e-cigarettes, becoming the first city in the United States to do so. The city's Board of Supervisors approved an ordinance that bans the sale of e-cigarettes and products that haven't been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Federal officials warned about an "epidemic" of teen vaping in the US and the San Francisco ban is expected to hit hard leading e-cigarette maker Juul Labs, based in the city. "We need to take action to protect the health of San Francisco’s youth and prevent the next generation of San Franciscans from becoming addicted to these products," San Francisco Mayor London Breed said in a statement.

Juul said it is working with lawmakers to keep the teenage population away from using tobacco products. "This full prohibition will drive former adult smokers who successfully switched to vapor products back to deadly cigarettes, deny the opportunity to switch for current adult smokers and create a thriving black market instead of addressing the actual causes of underage access and use. We have already taken the most aggressive actions in the industry to keep our products out of the hands of those underage and are taking steps to do more," a Juul spokesperson told The Hill.
