China suspends meat exports from Canada

China suspended all meat exports from Canada, further straining already tense relations between the two countries following the arrest of Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver.

Canadian media reported that a spokesman for the Chinese embassy said that a feed additive ractopamine, which is banned in China, was found in Canadian pork shipments and that 188 veterinary certificates were false. "In order to protect the safety of Chinese consumers, China has taken urgent preventive measures and requested the Canadian government to suspend the issuance of certificates for meat exported to China since June 25," the embassy said.

The Canadian Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food said that "inauthentic" certificates are a "technical issue" which is being investigated.
