Venezuela says it stopped US, Chile, Colombia-backed coup

Venezuela stopped a military coup attempt that was supported by the United States, Chile, Israel and Colombia, Caracas' Minister of Communication and Culture Jorge Rodriguez said on Wednesday. Rodriguez added that the coup attempt included a plot to assassinate President Nicolas Maduro.

The plan was supposed to be carried out on June 23 and June 24, the minister stressed and pointed out that former and current factions of the military wanted to proclaim the jailed General Raul Isaias Baduel president. Baduel, a former minister of defense, who has been under arrest since 2009 over corruption charges and over attempts to overthrow the government of President Nicolas Maduro. Venezuelan officials showed a video of an officer confession to the coup plan.

Tensions in Venezuela have been high since January when Juan Guaido proclaimed himself interim president and was backed in his efforts to overthrow Maduro by the United States. Meanwhile, China, Russia and Turkey support Maduro.
