Russia not responsible for arms race – Putin

"Signs" have emerged that the United States is "beginning to consider" the possibility to restore bilateral ties with the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin said. In an interview with Corriere della Sera published on Thursday before his visit to Italy, Russia's president added discussions may start between his country and the administration in Washington "on a wide-ranging strategic agenda" and revealed he spoke to President Donald Trump about it during the Group of Twenty summit in Japan. He stressed the need for "concrete agreements" regarding arms control and denied responsibility for the new arms race.

The decision by the US in 2002 to withdraw from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABMT) initially disturbed the balance but "Russia has the political will" to return to the table and "now it's up to the US" to make a move, Putin asserted and stressed his government spends much less on defense. After the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), "the Americans are de facto dismantling" the New START, he claimed.

Russia never interfered in European or US elections and it is ready to revamp relations with the EU in full scale, the president stated. Sanctions aren't an obstacle for investments in or by Italy, he said.
