US sanctions Venezuelan military intelligence dept.

The United States Treasury Department announced on Thursday it was adding Venezuela's General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence to the list of sanctioned entities and individuals due to agency's "notoriously violent methods" of conducting work.

"Treasury is committed to ending the former Maduro regime’s inhumane treatment of political opponents, innocent civilians, and members of the military in an effort to suppress dissent," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in the press release.

Earlier, opposition leader Juan Guaido said that talks with the Venezuelan government would resume in Barbados in an effort to resolve the ongoing political crisis in the country, with President Nicolas Maduro also expressing support for a "national dialogue for the sake of peace."
