Russia: US raising Iran tensions to overthrow govt

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused the United States on Thursday of escalating tensions around the Iran nuclear deal with the goal to overthrow the country's government.

"It is clear to all that Washington’s policy of exerting maximum pressure on Tehran, rooted in anti-Iranian sentiments and the desire to achieve a change of power in the sovereign state, is the prime cause of the current tension around the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)," Zakharova stated.

The Russian official agreed with Tehran's stance that the US requesting a special meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) due to Iran's decision to suspend some JCPOA commitments and start enriching uranium beyond the nuclear deal limit is "ironic" since it was Washington who first left the nuclear deal last year. "We hear about how the United States continues demanding that it is Iran that must unswervingly comply with all the terms of the nuclear deal, which the US side has been torpedoing for more than a year, impeding all the other countries to carry it through," she stressed.
