Biden would extend New START treaty if elected

Former United States Vice President and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden said on Thursday he would seek to renew the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) between the US and Russia if he is elected to the White House next year.

"I'll pursue an extension of New START Treaty - an anchor of strategic stability between the United States and Russia, and use that as a foundation for new arms control agreements," Biden said during a speech on foreign policy at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

The New START entered into force in 2011 and is set to expire in 2021. Moscow has expressed hope the agreement will be renewed, noting it is important for international security. However, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov noted earlier this year that the current US administration has not shown any desire to extend the New START yet.
