UK to let Iran tanker go if it doesn't head for Syria

Police in Gibraltar said on Saturday that the captain of supertanker Grace 1 and his three-member crew were released without charge but that they can't leave the British territory due to an investigation into a breach of sanctions against Syria. The United Kingdom's secretary of state for foreign and Commonwealth affairs said his country is "not seeking to escalate the situation" with Iran. According to Jeremy Hunt's tweet, he told Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif that the government in London may facilitate the release of the vessel.

However, he demands from the Middle Eastern country to guarantee that the ship won't go to Syria and insists on "due process" in Gibraltar. The phone call on the captured oil tanker was "constructive," Hunt said.

He added that he raised the issue of "wrongful imprisonment" of British-Iranian national Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and that he received assurances the other side "would continue to seek to find a solution."
