CDU head to become new Germany's defense minister - report

Chairwoman of Germany's ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (pictured), will become the country's next Defense Minister, Deutsche Welle reported citing government sources.

Within the political circles in Berlin, this decision is regarded as surprising since Kramp-Karrenbauer previously said she would forgo a governmental post in order to concentrate on party leadership. Besides this, media widely reported that the country's Health Minister Jens Spahn is the most likely candidate for the position of defense minister.

Outgoing Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen was earlier today voted in as the new president of the European Commission.
