Johnson wants election by summer 2020 - report

Tory leadership frontrunner Boris Johnson is planning to hold an early election if he becomes prime minister, according to The Times. Sources from his team said he does not want an election before the UK leaves the European Union, but that there are plans to go to the polls by the summer of 2020.

"There’s a desire to get this done while [Labour Party leader Jeremy] Corbyn is still around. Labour is utterly divided - Brexit is killing them. Labour is in no fit state to fight a general election," a senior member of Johnson's team stated. However, a spokesman for the former foreign minister countered that "there are no plans for an election before 2022. The focus is on winning the leadership campaign."
