Iran stops oil tanker near Larak Island in Gulf

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stopped and seized an oil tanker near Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on July 14, IRGC confirmed in a statement on Thursday.

The foreign vessel was carrying "smuggled fuel" and one million barrels of crude oil were found to be on the tanker. The IRGC did not state who owned the oil tanker but noted 12 crew members are being charged on suspicion of smuggling.

Earlier this month, the United Kingdom seized an Iranian oil tanker in Gibraltar which offset a worsening in relations between the two countries and in increase in UK military presence in the Gulf. Reports suggested last week that Iran captured a Panama-flagged ship, but Tehran denied the claims and said Iran helped a foreign oil tanker that needed technical assistance and repair.
