UK tanker seized by Iran for probe into accident

Iranian authorities said on Saturday that captured British tanker Stena Impero is being held with its crew of 23 people for investigation. It apparently ignored a distress call from a domestic fishing boat after the two vessels collided in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Ports and Maritime Organization was informed in line with regulations and the country's navy was sent to take the Swedish-owned tanker to the port of Bandar Abbas, the statement adds. It added the crew consists of 18 Indians and the rest are from Russia, the Philippines and Latvia. The ship traveled under the United Kingdom's flag of convenience. Tasnim agency learned from unnamed sources that Stena Impero is also suspected to have switched off its GPS signal and that it breached traffic rules.

Iran claimed the other tanker it stopped, British-operated MV Mesdar, had a Liberian flag and that it was only warned for leaking oil before it was let go, while the said report included allegations that Stena Impero polluted the water as well.
