European shares lower amid earnings

Equities on major stock markets in Europe traded lower on Thursday as investors analyze the slew of earning reports which came out during the morning, among them Siemens AG, ArcelorMittal SA, Royal Dutch Shell Plc, BMW AG, Rio Tinto Group, and Barclays plc. Meanwhile, the Bank of England was expected to keep interest rates on hold at 0.75%.

The FTSE 100 in London was 0.44% lower at 9:15 as Shell plc fell 2.61% at the same time. In Frankfurt, the DAX slipped 0.12% a minute later with Siemens losing 3.98%. The CAC 40 was practically flat as STMicroelectronics tumbled 2% and Societe Generale rose SA 2.95%.

The euro and the pound were 0.30% and 0.37% lower against the dollar at 9:14 am CET, changing hands for $1.10422 and $1.21144 respectively.
