Dow falls 350 pts as HK protests add to US-China tensions

Shares on Wall Street extended losses on Monday as tensions between the United States and China spilled over to the issue of the ongoing protests in Hong Kong, which resulted this morning in the closure of the international airport in that city, the eighth busiest in the world by passenger traffic. Beijing has accused Washington of meddling in the autonomous city's affairs, while the US has indicated that China's handling of the demonstrations in the former British colony would be closely monitored.

Meanwhile, the People’s Bank of China set its daily midpoint for yuan at 7.0211 per dollar.

The Dow was down 358 points at 2:31 pm ET with Pfizer leading the losses. At the same time, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 lost 1.20% and 1.12%, respectively.
