Report: Sullivan seen as US ambassador to Russia

Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan is expected to be appointed the United States envoy to Russia, the New York Times wrote on Tuesday. The paper quoted an unnamed White House official revealing the plan after Jon Huntsman quit as ambassador after a tenure of two years and reportedly started preparations to try and become Utah governor again.

Sullivan is known for his combative stance regarding the Kremlin. During the confirmation hearing two years ago, he was especially critical of Russia amid indications of US election interference in 2016. Huntsman is due to leave his post on October 3.
