Apple close to screens deal with China's BOE - report

Apple is close to an agreement with China's BOE Technology Group to buy displays from the company and reduce its dependence on Samsung Display, Nikkei Asian Review reported on Wednesday.

Apple is said to be testing OLED displays produced by the top Chinese display maker and it will make the final call on the potential partnership by the end of 2019. The current global OLED market is dominated by Samsung which has a market share of over 90%. Apple is planning on launching two OLED screen iPhones next year.

However, the report stated that fears exist over the US-China trade tensions as BOE uses materials from American companies such as Applied Materials, 3M and Corning to manufacture its displays, meaning that any measures against the Chinese company could hit Apple badly. BOE also provides Huawei with its foldable smartphone displays for the Mate X.
