Merkel: We could find solution to Brexit in 30 days

German Chancellor Angela Merkel denied on Thursday that she had set October 31 as a deadline to find a solution for the Brexit deadlock.

What she meant when she said a solution can be found in 30 days was that "what one can achieve in three or two years" might also be achieved in 30 days, highlighting the short time Britain has on its hands before it departs the European Union. Merkel went on to say that the solution would "probably" be reached in two years, but wondered whether one can be found in the next 30 days.

Prior to her meeting with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday, the German Chancellor underlined that she hopes for the "most friction-free British exit" from the bloc and remained adamant regarding the Irish backstop being an integral part of the withdrawal deal.
