Di Maio starts talks to form new government

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development Luigi Di Maio announced on Thursday that he has launched talks to secure a "serious majority" in a bid to form a new government, but underlined that, if it comes to snap election, his Five Star Movement would not be afraid of its performance.

Calling an early election, however, "cannot be an excuse to run away" from things that need to be done, Di Maio warned. He also pointed out that he has handed President Sergio Mattarella ten reforms that need passing before the Parliament can be dissolved, noting that current legislature can pass the requested reforms.

The announcement comes in the light of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte's resignation, offered to and accepted by President Mattarella on Tuesday. During his address to the Senate on the day he announced he would step down, Conte blamed Interior Minister Matteo Salvini for the government crisis, calling his actions "irresponsible."
