Report: US-China trade deal 'tough to improbable'

A trade deal between China and the United States is "tough to improbable," sources close to President Donald Trump told Axios on Friday.

The worries come amid escalating tensions with Beijing over the mass protests in Hong Kong, as well as Taiwan after the island received approval from the US Department of Defense to buy fighter jets worth $8 billion deal from the US. China has called on Washington to give up on the sale.

On Thursday, China said it is prepared to respond with "countermeasures" to trade tariffs introduced by the US. "If the US obstinately clings to its own way, China has no choice but to take corresponding countermeasures," Commerce Ministry spokesman Gao Feng warned.
