G7 leaders give Macron go-ahead to send Iran message - report

G7 leaders agreed that French President Emmanuel Macron should hold talks with and send messages to Iran, media reported on Sunday citing a source familiar with the matter.

The source said that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and defusing tensions in the Persian Gulf remained a priority. The source added that Macron was asked to pass messages on to Iranian authorities on the basis of talks held by G7 leaders on Saturday.

The report comes after Iran's Foreign Minster Mohammad Javad Zarif praised Macron's proposals on the resolution of the country's disputed nuclear program as "a step in the right direction." He also previously said that his discussions with Macron on the topic were "productive."
