Varadkar: No Brexit deal without backstop

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said on Monday that most countries in the European Union would "prefer" that the United Kingdom leaves the bloc on October 31, however, Brussels would be willing to consider an extension if a "good reason" is provided.

The issue of Brexit has dominated British politics for far too long, Varadkar agreed with his counterpart from London, Boris Johnson, and the issue needs to be settled once and for all. On the other hand, the Irish prime minister stressed his government would oppose if the UK imposed a direct rule in Northern Ireland.

Additionally, any Brexit deal without a backstop provision would not have the support of the government in Dublin, the Taoiseach stated.
