US ready to return 15 bases to South Korea

The United States Forces Korea (USFK) said on Wednesday that it cleared four military installations that the government in Seoul specifically demanded to be returned. The Shea Range at Camp Hovey in Dongducheon, camps Eagle and Long in Wonju and parcels of Camp Market in Bupyeong, all in the country's northern part, have been vacated and closed, according to the statement. It revealed 15 sites were made available so far.

South Korea requested from the Pentagon last month to leave the remaining 26 bases earlier than agreed, the update adds. The US "remains committed to returning installations as expeditiously as possible," the military said and praised the alliance with the East Asian country.

The demand from President Moon Jae-in followed the government's decision to cease sharing military intelligence with Japan, which the US opposed. The Department of Defense in Washington returned 54 facilities so far.
