Johnson's Brexit proposals 'utter waste of time' - report

Sources close to ITV's political editor Robert Peston said on Friday that, when it comes to replacing the backstop clause from the Brexit deal, the United Kingdom and the European Union are as far from agreement as ever. In addition, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's so-called non-paper proposals are apparently seen as an "utter waste of time" by the administration in Brussels.

The sources also underlined that Johnson has never been farther away from what the bloc regards as a potential "landing zone," meaning that the sealing the final deal and having it approved on time is growing increasingly unlikely. According to Peston's multiple sources, the EU will take "one last push, one last chance" after the Conservative Party conference, which takes place from September 29 through October 2.

Britain's Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay and EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier agreed earlier to have "technical talks" continued, particularly with regard to avoiding a hard border on the island of Ireland.
