The United States will not join Turkey in its "long-planned operation" in northern Syria which will aim to create a so-called safe zone in the region, the White House confirmed.

In a statement published after a telephone call between US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the White House said: "The United States Armed Forces will not support or be involved in the operation, and United States forces, having defeated the ISIS territorial "Caliphate," will no long be in the immediate area." The US also added that it will not be holding ISIS fighters that it captured in the area as prisoners anymore and that Turkey agreed to take over responsibility for them.
