EU calls on Turkey to cease military op in Syria

The European Union urges Turkey to stop the "unilateral military action" in northern Syria, warning that "renewed armed hostilities" might "further undermine the stability of the whole region" and aggravate "civilian suffering," the Office of High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement reiterated that a "sustainable solution" to crisis in Syria cannot be achieved through military means as any action by armed forces would "undermine the security of the Coalition’s local partners" and "prospects for the UN-led political process to achieve peace" in the war-torn country. The bloc also suggested that the so-called safe zone in Syria is "unlikely" to "satisfy international criteria for refugee return."

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced earlier that the country's armed forces and the Syrian National Army launched "Operation Peace Spring" in northern Syria, causing a backlash from international partners. So far, the operation claimed two civilian lives, despite promises that it would target only the Kurdish militia and ISIS terrorists.
