Apple scraps HK police-tracking app from store

Apple Inc. confirmed that HKmap.live has been removed from its App Store. The app was used by protesters in Hong Kong as a means to track down where police is in the city so it is easier for demonstrators to escape arrest.

Apple said in a statement: "Many concerned customers in Hong Kong have contacted us about this app and we immediately began investigating it. The app displays police locations and we have verified with the Hong Kong Cybersecurity and Technology Crime Bureau that the app has been used to target and ambush police, threaten public safety, and criminals have used it to victimize residents in areas where they know there is no law enforcement."

The app represented police with a dog emoji on a map and angered Chinese media. An opinion piece published in The People's Daily strongly criticized Apple for allowing the app to be available within its services.
