Pelosi: No requirement for House impeachment vote

In a clear setback to the initiative to take down United States President Donald Trump, Nancy Pelosi said "at this point" there would be no full vote to formalize the impeachment inquiry. The speaker of the House of Representatives stated "there is no requirement" for such a move. She accused Republicans of pressing on procedure issues because of the lack of arguments to defend the president.

Steny Hoyer, leader of the majority in the lower chamber of the US Congress, said the plan is "currently on hold" and that "no vote is necessary to continue the investigation.

The decision was announced following a meeting of the House Democratic Caucus. Unnamed insiders told the media that some "vulnerable" lawmakers may have led opposition leaders to postpone the risky step in the process.
