Europe closes mixed as UK, EU scramble to reach deal

European equities finished trading mixed on Wednesday as discussions on Britain's exit from the European Union enter its final hours. European Council President Donald Tusk said earlier that the fate of a possible Brexit deal will be clear "in seven to eight hours." Meanwhile, the government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson is seeking a special sitting of Parliament on Saturday.

The DAX rose 0.32% led higher by Volkswagen. In Paris, the CAC 40 fell 0.09% with Danone as the worst performer. The FTSE 100 lost 0.61%. The euro gained 0.27% against the dollar at 5:30 pm CET, buying 1.10627, while the pound jumped 0.39% versus the greenback, going for 1.28339.
