Shoygu: US lowering global security by leaving deals

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu (pictured) warned on Monday that the United States is putting global security at risk by pulling out of nuclear agreements. He stressed you should "not cancel and not destroy the old without creating the new."

"Nothing new has come to replace the agreements from which the United States has withdrawn. As a result, the security level has become much lower, and the world has become less predictable. In our opinion, those existing agreements should be preserved," Shoygu said at the 9th Beijing Xiangshan Forum. The US pulled out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, in 2018 and withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with Russia earlier this year.

The Russian official also noted Moscow would like to renew the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) with Washington and stressed the deal could be amended if needed after its extension. "First you need to extend it, and then deal with its improvement," he stated.
