Barnier: Brexit is lose-lose, but we all want deal

European Union's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said on Tuesday that Britain's departure from the EU is regrettable but insisted it is still in everybody's interest for the United Kingdom to leave the bloc with an agreement.

"Brexit is lose-lose. Nobody, including Nigel Farage, has been able to explain to me any added value to Brexit. So we've tried to respect the British vote, even if we regret it," Barnier told the European Parliament. He stressed the European Parliament will "have the final word" on the Brexit deal the two sides reached last week, stressing it should not ratify it before the UK does.

Earlier, European Council President Donald Tusk called the revised deal "acceptable" and pointed out if a no-deal scenario happens, it will not be the EU's choice. The UK government's motion to hold a meaningful vote on the deal in the House of Commons was denied on Monday, while Parliament is set to start the debate and have a vote on the Withdrawal Agreement Bill later in the day with the final vote on the matter expected on Thursday. However, the Brexit deal is unlikely to pass without any amendments with Labour, the DUP and the SNP among parties which plan to vote against it.
