Beijing planning to replace HK's Carrie Lam - report

Beijing is considering replacing Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam amid protests in the autonomous region, FT reported on Tuesday, citing sources briefed on the matter.

The new head of the Hong Kong authority would be an interim chief executive and would only take their post in March and would be in charge in Hong Kong until the end of Lam's term in 2022. The decision will most likely be made by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Potential candidates for the post include former Hong Kong Chief Secretary Henry Tang and banker Norman Chan.

Hong Kong protests started earlier this year after Lam introduced a bill to allow extradition from Hong Kong to China. One of the protesters' demands has been for her to step down.
