German intel chief against allowing Huawei in 5G networks

German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) President Bruno Kahl (pictured) said on Tuesday that he does not believe the country should allow Chinese firms including Huawei to provide equipment for the country's 5G networks.

Speaking at a hearing in the Bundestag, Kahl stressed the 5G infrastructure is "too important" to rely on a company that cannot be fully trusted and noted he doesn't think Berlin reached a final decision on whether to ban Chinese companies from its 5G networks.

Earlier this month, media reported that Germany initially planned to ban Huawei from its 5G networks, but then decided to allow it to provide equipment after Chancellor Angela Merkel was worried the ban could negatively affect bilateral relations between Germany and China.
