Chile cancels hosting APEC summit amid protests

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera announced on Wednesday that Chile will not host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in November as a result of widespread protests across the country.

"This has been a very difficult decision, which causes us a lot of pain," Pinera stated. "But we have based the decision on a wise principle of common sense. When a father has problems he must privilege his family over other options, always a president must put his countrymen over others," he added and noted the COP25, which was also set to be held in the South American country will be suspended as well.

The APEC summit was scheduled for November 16-17 and United States President Donald Trump planned to sign the phase one trade deal with China at the event. Earlier, Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the event.
